Adjunct faculty member named colonel in South Carolina State Guard
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley recently appointed Dr. Charles T. Muse, an online adjunct faculty member and competency-based education specialist for the School of Business and Professional Studies, to the position of colonel in the South Carolina State Guard.
Muse brings more than 30 years of experience in the areas of logistics and organizational restructuring to the position. Muse will serve as a special adviser to State Guard commander, Maj. Gen. Thomas Mullikin, and as commanding officer of the 3rd Brigade, which supports the coastal counties of South Carolina. The State Guard is currently structured as an infantry division but needs to be reorganized to better fulfill its mission of responding rapidly to disasters within the state.
Muse and Mullikin will restructure the brigade into two rapid response teams and one community service battalion. New specially trained and organized teams within the rapid response teams will deploy during emergencies. For instance, they’ll train and deploy for water rescues, including those requiring specialized SCUBA training.
As an adjunct faculty member at Brandman University since 2011, Muse participated in the design and development of the supply chain relationship management competency for the MyPath, competency-based, four-year degree in business. He previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps on both active and reserve duty.
The State Guard in South Carolina enjoys a rich history that stretches back to volunteer citizen-militia formed at Charles Towne with the first settlers in 1670. During the most recent flood disaster, more than 500 members of the guard supported the state with 22,000 hours of disaster relief support. Their duties include helping protect people and property during both natural and man-made disasters and helping communities recover.
Muse and his wife Susan have three adult sons: Thomas, an associate with Justice Works of Conway, South Carolina; Alex, an inspector for the North Carolina DMV who is currently deployed to Cuba with the North Carolina Special Detachment of Military Police; and Matthew, a 2012 “American Idol” contestant and actor.
