Keith Debro, who teaches education courses at Brandman University’s Walnut Creek Fairfield campuses, was honored prior to Major League All-Star Game

IRVINE, Calif. (July 18, 2014) — Keith Debro, an adjunct faculty member at Brandman University, was honored in a pre-game ceremony before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis. Debro was representing the Oakland Athletics after fans elected him through the Target/People All-Star Teacher Program.

“My wife nominated me after seeing an ad in People Magazine looking for dedicated teachers who also have a love for baseball,” said Debro. A’s fans did the rest, choosing him over two other finalists. He was one of 30 teachers, each representing a Major League Baseball team, honored at the 2014 All-Star Game. “It’s hard to describe the feeling I had sting on that field.”

Debro is currently teaching Education 511 (Collaboration for Inclusive Schooling) at Brandman University’s Walnut Creek Campus. Since 1989, Debro has taught special education for the Oakland Unified School District. “Special education changes so quickly, therefore I am fortunate to be in the classroom to assist Brman students with my real world experiences,” said Debro.

For the past 14 years, Debro has taught special education at Oakland Technical High School. He earned his All-Star Teacher recognition by establishing a school mentoring program that pairs high school students with elementary students. He often uses his own money to take students on field trips he attends all district meetings to act as a voice for special education students their parents.

Debro, who played college baseball at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., has attended A’s games since the team first moved to Oakland.
