Kedziora honored

Brandman- affiliated supporters on hand to congratulate former Moreno Valley Unified School District Superintendent Judy White (center) and the district’s new superintendent, Martinrex Kedziora (far right) for their latest honors were Ed.D. alumna Mallanie Avinger, Ed.D. advisor Phil Pendley, Associate Dean Lynn Larsen, and Ed.D. alumni LaFaye Platter and Sharon Nakama. Faculty member Tami Capellino and Corporate and Community Relations Manager Sheila Bishop also attended the ceremony.

Martinrex Kedziora, a cohort mentor for the Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in organizational leadership program at Brandman University and the new superintendent for the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD), is the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Assistant Superintendent of the Year for Region XIX.

Kedziora, who was assistant superintendent at MVUSD before taking on his new role Feb. 1, and fellow honoree Judy White, the region’s Superintendent of the Year and the former MVUSD superintendent, were the guests of honor at a celebration attended by numerous people from Brandman University. White is the new school superintendent for Riverside County.

“It’s a remarkable coincidence,” said school board President Cleveland Johnson.  “But it also is further confirmation that both the Riverside County Office of Education Board of Trustees and our school board made the right decisions when they chose Dr. White and we chose Dr. Kedziora as our leaders.  Both organizations are now in good hands, and we couldn’t be more pleased to see Drs. White and Kedziora honored by ACSA.”

Both are eligible for statewide honors later this year.

Kedziora works with Ed.D. students at Brandman’s Riverside campus. Several graduates from the program attended the ceremony as well as faculty members from the School of Education and other campus representatives. Those included Mallanie Avinger, Phil Pendley, Lynn Larsen, LaFaye Platter, Sharon Nakama, Tami Capellino and Sheila Bishop.

White and Kedziora each have more than 30 years of education experience, serving at every level of responsibility at various school districts.  In their six years together at Moreno Valley Unified, they led a transformation that has seen the district’s graduation rate increase by 20.5 percent – by far the greatest increase for any school district in Riverside County – and closed the “achievement gap” in the process.

The Moreno Valley district is the third largest in Riverside County and the 23rd largest in California. It serves more than 33,000 students at 40 schools and has graduation rates that exceed both the state and national averages.

ACSA is the largest umbrella organization for school leaders in the United States, serving more than 17,000 California educators. It advocates for public school students in kindergarten through grade 12, as well as adult learners. Brandman University partners with ACSA to provide scholarships, workshops and other opportunities for ACSA members and Brandman students.

School of Education Associate Dean Lynn Larsen and Tim McGillivray, public information officer for MVUSD, contributed to this report.
