Brandman partners with San Luis Obispo to create teaching credential cohorts

February 06, 2017 by Brandman University

San Luis Obispo County residents will be able to earn teaching credentials thanks to a partnership between the county Office of Education and Brandman University’s Santa Maria campus. Classes will be taught at the Office of Education, 3350 Education Drive, San Luis Obispo, by faculty members from the university.  Classes begin on March 6 (Spring II session) and May 1 (Summer I) with a significant scholarship available.

“This is an opportunity for the working professional, interested in earning a teaching credential, to do so through this nontraditional program setting,” said Dr. James J. Brescia, county superintendent of schools.

Completing a multiple- or single-subject credential program is a requirement for teaching in self-contained K-12 classrooms in California. Enrollment is open to those who have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and passed the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) or its equivalent.

SLO County and many other areas of California are facing a teacher shortage that is likely to grow. The California Teachers Association predicts that 106,000 new teachers will be needed in the state by 2025.

The Brandman program would create cohorts of at least 12 people, who would complete the curriculum together. By taking their classes as a cohort, students build a sense of community and a network of co-learners with close ties to Brandman’s faculty, many of whom also work in area school districts and live in the area.

“This program is perfect for parents and those working as aides or substitute teachers who want to take the next step toward shaping the future of San Luis Obispo,” said Patricia Graham, Santa Maria campus director. “We’re always looking for ways to make education more convenient and affordable for the Central Coast.”

Information about earning a teaching credential is available on, by contacting the university via email at or calling 805-863-8153.
