Grant will lead to Scholarship opportunities

IRVINE, Calif. (October 27, 2011) – Brandman University’s School of Nursing and Health Professions has received a gift of $350,000 from the Fletcher Jones Foundation in support of scholarships for promising students with financial need.  This gift will be instrumental in enabling Brandman University nursing students to complete an advanced degree, achieve their professional goals, and contribute to the advancement of health care in our communities.

Renee McLeod, Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions said, “The Fletcher Jones Foundation is really making a difference for the nursing community and ultimately our patients, who will receive better care from highly skilled nursing leaders and practitioners.  The trend that I’ve been seeing is that the majority of potential students cite financial issues and the inability to leave their jobs to go back to school in this very difficult economic climate.  Even when the outcome means an increase in income, they are unable to cover the tuition cost.  This donation provides a real solution.”

Support from the Fletcher Jones Foundation demonstrates a vote of confidence in Brandman’s innovative School of Nursing and Health Professions, which was established in 2009.  All Brandman University nursing faculty have doctorates and current real world experience with established practices and state of the art technology. The curriculum is evidence-based, which trains students for the job and narrows the gap between educational theory and a vital, evolving healthcare practice.

Along with programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) and Health Risk and Crisis Communication (MS), Brandman offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program for nurse practitioners in five critical areas –adult geriatric primary and acute care, mental health, neonatal and pediatric care. The scholarship is particularly relevant given new recommendations by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020, and a recommendation by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to establish the DNP as the entry point to advanced practice nursing by 2015.

“Fletcher Jones is an important foundation and their support means so much for Brandman.  In the current economy, philanthropic contributions have declined significantly.  To be granted such a generous first-time gift from the Fletcher Jones Foundation speaks volumes to the future of our nursing program,” said Linda Dixon, Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancement at Brandman University.

All Brandman University programs are specifically designed for adults. Working RNs can explore educational options at Brandman University that will include an online nursing component, short immersion sessions on campus and a state-of-the-art immersive simulation lab that offers real world application of the latest technology. The flexibility and convenience of Brandman’s DNP program is further emphasized by clinical practice internships arranged near the student’s work or home.
