Brandman University Disavows Racism, Affirms Diversity and Inclusion

June 05, 2020 by Gary Brahm

Dear Students,

Right now, we understand that many of you are affected, outraged, confused, disgusted, and filled with a host of other emotions resulting from the current climate of the nation. Amongst dealing with the global and personal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, you are now faced with processing the intense and heartfelt expression of anger individuals all over the world are displaying over the death of George Floyd and the other countless acts of injustice stemming from the unsettled, and often unaddressed, issue of systemic racism. You too may be angry. The University understands the outcries for justice and embraces our constitutional right to peacefully protest and voice opinions. We encourage conscious and mindful dialogue about issues of injustice when presented in University forums. We also understand some of you may not know how to immediately respond to these challenges, and that’s okay as well.

The University today is reaffirming that it values and respects the diverse and extraordinary students it serves. We denounce any form of and/or acts of discrimination. We believe this is an opportunity for all University stakeholders and community members to self-reflect on our personal and collective values. We understand that talking about the issues will not provide the solutions to the problems.

One of the concerns we are hearing from students is a feeling of helplessness and uncertainty in what each individual can do to effect change. If you are looking for tangible steps that you can take, we can suggest the following:

    • Complete the census: The census plays a key role in how governmental representation is determined. Stand up and be counted. It matters.
    • Vote: Look beyond the major national elections. How are your local and state representatives responding to your needs? Use your ballot to support those whose initiatives align with your priorities.
    • Learn and Listen: Find opportunities to learn about our history and how we have arrived here. Choose courses that will help you to dive deeper on important topics. Engage faculty members to find resources that can expand your frame of reference. Listen to others. Truly listen rather than waiting to talk. When we feel heard, we are more open to meaningful dialogue.

Education can be transformative, and we believe in the role all of us can play to move us in a positive direction. We know we have work to do within each of us, and as an institution. Brandman University commits to doing the internal reflection and identifying where we can make systemic changes for the benefit of all our community members and hopefully the world at large.

Sincerely,

Gary Brahm
