Brandman University earns A+ in teacher preparation

November 12, 2015 by Brandman University

NCATE-ImageProgram design, trust, collaboration, a willingness to work across program areas and the ability to adjust quickly to changes in both technology and standards have put Brandman University ahead of the curve in preparing educators, and earned important stamps of approval from both the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Following a site visit by accreditation teams in April of this year, both CTC and NCATE unanimously recommended accreditation for Bradman and praised leadership in the School of Education for meeting all 152 program standards – a rare accomplishment.

While Brandman has been CTC accredited for a number of years, this marks the first national professional accreditation by NCATE. In California, CTC accreditation is required for teacher preparation programs which are typically evaluated every seven years; national professional accreditation is voluntary and represents the highest standards of excellence. The report recommending accreditation said that Brandman University educator preparation programs “model the best practices at an extraordinary level.”

“While these stamps of excellence are certainly a badge of honor for us, more importantly, they demonstrate that Brandman graduates are ready for the difficult and vital jobs in today’s modern environment,” said Dr. Christine Zeppos, Dean of the School of Education. “Less than a third of California universities are professionally accredited by NCATE and very few are found to have met every single standard. This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the high quality faculty and programs at Brandman.”

“This is a fantastic honor for Brandman and we are most proud of Dean Zeppos and the School of Education for the numerous accolades,” said Brandman University Chancellor Gary Brahm. “When Brandman University was first founded as part of Chapman University in 1958, teacher preparation was one of the primary areas of focus for the institution. Now, more than five decades later, that legacy of quality education programs continues with one of the highest national honors.”

Founded in 1954, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is the profession’s mechanism to help establish high quality teacher and administrator preparation. In 2013, NCATE and TEAC merged into the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is an agency in the Executive Branch of California State Government. It was created in 1970 by the Ryan Act and is the oldest of the autonomous state standards boards in the nation. The major purpose of the agency is to serve as a state standards board for educator preparation for the public schools of California, the licensing and credentialing of professional educators in the State, the enforcement of professional practices of educators, and the discipline of credential holders in the State of California.
