Community rallies around Yuba City athletic director and Brandman student after accident

January 05, 2017 by Brandman University

River Valley High athletic director Phil McCaulley, right, pictured with his wife, Elizabeth, was involved in a diving accident last week while in Hawaii. Phil McCaulley is a Brandman student.

UPDATE: Phil McCauley is now at UC Davis Medical Hospital awaiting further surgery after being transported from Hawaii Thursday afternoon.  The campaign to support him and his family continues.

The Yuba City community is rallying around Phil McCaulley, athletic director at River Valley High School and a student in Brandman University’s online M.A. in educational leadership and administration program (M.A.-ELA). McCaulley was injured while on vacation in Hawaii with his family. While diving through a wave, he hit his head on the ocean floor and broke his neck in several places.

Yuba City campus Community and Corporate Relations Manager Barbara Forkey is hoping the Brandman community will join in the effort to support McCauley and his family. “He needs a special private medical plane transport back for surgeries.  The high school set-up website to help raise the money needed to bring him and his wife back to California at a cost of $60,000.  They have currently raised approximately $43,000 thus far with over 400 donations,” reported Forkey, originally. (Note: He has since been moved to UC Davis Medical Center but donations are still be accepted.)

A television report on Fox/40 quoted River Valley High School Principal Tom Reusser: “He is a dedicated teacher, coach, athletic director and he’s all about the students. Two days after the surgery, he was calling me about the things that needed to get done here while he was going to be out.”
