Faculty notes – January 23
Michael Moodian, associate professor of social sciences, and Lata Murti, assistant professor of sociology, recently presented at the 15th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education, January 2-6, 2017, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Murti discussed “Innovative and Interdisciplinary Program Review Strategies: A Case Study of Two Programs,” which she co-wrote with Sheila Steinberg, professor of social and environmental sciences. It was based on their work revising the B.A. in sociology and the B.A. in social sciences programs in 2015-2016 and highlighted the distinguishing features of the revision process, including a literature review, competitive analysis, and incorporating feedback from internal and external stakeholders to design cutting-edge curriculum
Moodian presented “Educational Leadership with a Global Mindset: A Quantitative Study,” based on his current research of the intercultural competence of doctoral students studying organizational leadership.
Brandman University’s School of Arts and Sciences has had a strong representation at the conference for the last two years, since the 14th Annual meeting in 2016.”
Laura Galloway, assistant professor of business, presented at the International Academic Forum, Educating for
Change – Technology in the Classroom, in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Jan. 8. Her presentation, “Learning Containers: How to Build, Create, Support and Facilitate Authentic Learning in Virtual Spaces,” focused on the philosophy and process of redesigning online courses that 1) adjusts and adapts to the benefits of technology, 2) builds learning communities and meets the learning needs and expectations of adult learners. She provided practical tips and applicable practices on how to re-purpose notions of traditional “on-ground” pedagogy to design and deliver courses online that meet the needs of students.
Evelina Atanassova defended her dissertation focusing on organizations theories and behavior and earned her a Ph.D. in management at HEC Paris, one of the top business schools in Europe, in
December. Her research focused on social networks and social capital, including proposing a new theoretical framework for analyzing social capital that deconstructs its major function beyond bridging or bonding into its substance as social relations versus position in network structure. She also wrote about “When to bridge and when to bond” and “Should one start with bridging or with bonding?”
Atanassova have been working for Brandman as an adjunct faculty member for almost three years, teaching 20 courses for the School of Business and Professional Studies. Her professional goal is to find a full-time commitment to teaching and research as an assistant professor.
Leticia Rojas, an assistant professor at the Ontario campus, is an American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) faculty fellow for 2017. The School of Education faculty member will attend a three-day seminar in March, focusing on how to support new Latina and Latino faculty members and linking them to mentors to focus on the publication process.
