Police chief-faculty member launches school ‘adoption’ program
Rancho Cordova Chief of Police Michael Goold, who teaches the “Ethics and Politics of Decision Making” course in Brandman University’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program, introduced an adopt-a-school program for his department last year. The program was recently featured on Good Day Sacramento.
Police officers adopt one of the 12 elementary schools in the police department’s jurisdiction and visit the school several times a month. The officers participate in monthly ceremonies recognizing students who exhibit good behavior in a variety of areas, including attendance and academics. Local businesses provide merchandise to accompany the certificate the police officer gives each child.
“The program has been really successful,” said Goold. “The officers get to be with the kids in a non-enforcement setting, the children are better behaved and the relationship with school staff and the PD has been awesome.”
