A Tribute to Former Brandman Board of Regents Chairman David A. Janes Sr.
A message from Brandman University chancellor, Gary Brahm
It is with great sadness that I share the news that David A. Janes Sr. passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019. David was a dedicated friend of the Brandman community. He was appointed to serve as an inaugural member of the Brandman Board of Regents in 2007. He rose to chairman of the board in March 2010 and served in this capacity through February 2015.
David’s commitment to Brandman University was exceptional. Following the Call to Order agenda item at each and every Board of Regent’s meeting, he always made it a point to remind his colleagues of Brandman’s vision and mission, referring them to the statements printed on the inside cover of the board books.
In February 2015, Dave stepped down as chair of the Brandman Board of Regents to become chair of the Chapman Board of Trustees. At his last meeting as Brandman board chair, Dave again referred to the university’s mission, noting the operative word “the” in “We will be ‘the’ recognized leader in the evolution of adult learning.” He stated, “I believe Brandman has pretty much achieved this recognition. Wearethe leaders in adult learning.”
Dave was a mentor to me and to many in our leadership team. His vision, leadership, innovative spirit and steady hand at the tiller helped guide us through our early years. He understood how essential his guidance was in building the foundation of Brandman, and that his impact would be felt for years to come. That is why he took such great pride and satisfaction in all of our accomplishments and recognitions during the past few years.
On behalf of the entire Brandman community, I have expressed our sincere condolences to his wife Donna and the Janes family.
