IRVINE, Calif (March 16, 2012) - On April 11 from 9 a.m – 3 p.m., Brandman University will host its first-ever Military Transition Career Fair at the Irvine campus; a free event that will bring together leading local employers and those transitioning from military service into the civilian workforce. A number of career workshops and services will be offered as well, including resume reviews, interview skills and job search strategies. The Military Transition Career Fair is open to enlisted service members, veterans and their families.
Lawyers from the AMVETS Legal Clinic, which provides free legal representation to military families and veterans, will host workshops to help familiarize veterans and military members with their rights under federal law. They will also schedule individual appointments to meet with prospective clients (to secure an appointment time, call 714-628-2692 to schedule an appointment in advance; prospective clients, without pre-scheduled appointments, will be seen as time permits). The AMVETS Legal Clinic is funded by AMVETS, Department of California —a leader since 1944 in preserving the freedoms secured by America’s Armed Forces.
“Securing employment after military service can be a challenge, especially in today’s economy, and this event was designed to support our local heroes by connecting them directly with local employers and assisting with transition skill development,” said Chermaine Harrell, Sgt. Maj. USMC (ret), Director of Military & Veteran Relations. “At Brandman University we have been serving military students for more than 50 years and we understand their unique needs. Veteran employment statistics show that there is still a need for events like this as more service members transition to the civilian workforce.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for rate for veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan rose to 12.1 percent in 2011, up from 11.5 percent in 2010, according to the BLS. Non-veterans saw a jobless rate of 8.7 percent last year, down from 9.4 percent in 2010.
"OCBC commends Brandman University for hosting the Military Transition Career Fair. Orange County is deeply rooted in its past military tradition, nurturing its present economic recovery, and optimistic for its future growth. The business community is honored to consider employment opportunities for those who have served this country,” said Lucy Dunn, CEO & President of the Orange County Business Council (OCBC).
"It's great to see so many Irvine companies come together to support honorable men and women who served our country, transition to the civilian workforce. I applaud Brandman University for investing in its community,” said Jeffrey Lalloway, Irvine City Councilman.
Some of the many local employers represented at the event will include ABM Facility Services, Advantage Sales & Marketing, Bank of America, County of Orange, Gavin DeBecker, Edward Jones, Kaiser Permanente, Merrill Lynch, Oakley, Schools First Credit Union, Pacific Life, Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Staffmark, The Men’s Warehouse, UPS, Verizon Wireless, Vinculums, Wells Fargo and more.
