Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA (November 13, 2013) — Brandman University is announcing the winner of its 2013 Soldier Scholar Award, recognizing an active duty military student for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and in the military. This year’s Soldier Scholar Award winner is U.S. Army Master Sergeant Levester Charles, Sr. “Master Sergeant Charles is serious about his education,” says Mary Ann Bardoni-Barbe, Brandman University campus director at JBLM. “He is taking an opportunity to better himself both personally and professionally.”
Soldier Scholars are selected based on the recommendation of their academic advisor, with approval from the university’s campus director. Consideration for this honor is based upon grade point average at the university, attitude, and professionalism. Charles will be honored at a 9 a.m. ceremony held Nov. 21 at the Stone Education Center at JBLM. Charles is currently pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in organizational leadership.
Charles is originally from Galveston, TX. He has served in the U.S. Army for more than 25 years, completing numerous assignments at Fort Sill, OK, Fort Bragg, NC, and at Fort Lewis, WA. He has held positions outside the military in both warehouse management, and in human resources. Charles has been active in the Army Reserves, and was recalled to active duty at JBLM in Jan. 2009, where he served until June 2012. At that time, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound as a warehouse manager, before being recalled to active duty in May 2013 at JBLM.
